![]() ![]() And in that year leading up to launch, we had created a fan community that was far greater than the amount of players and people who actually play the game, because of the story, and the heroes, and what the franchise actually meant to people. “ When the Overwatch universe was created, when the museum piece was unveiled at Blizzcon… We announced Blizzcon with this short, and showed gameplay, let people play with this many heroes. That’s one of the things that’s so magical, and something that really took us so hugely by surprise, you know? And experiencing the shorts, like, it’s not expected that there’s an absolute continuation between the shorts. You go in and play Overwatch, that’s a thing. Music Director and Blizzard veteran Derek Duke expands on the interplay between narrative digression and what players experience in a typical Overwatch match: “ There is a suspension of disbelief that is expected. So, it’s very intentional to try to create and build out the world from the very, very beginning.” Because it is a first-person shooter, there’s not a lot of other opportunities to get that, to create the world, right? Eventually, two so-called “seasons” of these shorts would come to pass, with the opening season ending with the unexpected and wordless “ The Last Bastion,” an origin story for the machine-gunning omnic hero. This would eventually lead to " Recall" in 2016, where character Winston decides to try and reinstate the Overwatch team. It began with the original release of the Overwatch cinematic trailer in 2014, an animated 6-minute short revealing the game and depicting an early adventure by the reformed team. ![]()
